KRAFTY HAS LAUNCHED A NEW BLONDE BEER

Back in 1893, the Spaten brewery in Munich wanted to create a ‘lager’ beer that could compete with the Pilsner from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Pilsner had conquered the beer market since its first appearance in 1842. At the end of the 19th century, it conquered Munich, where people drank a dark beer with a rich malty texture called Bavarian ‘Dunkel’.

The brewers at Spaten created a straw-coloured beer called Helles Lager Bier, which translates as ‘pale lager beer’. It was slightly more malty than its Bohemian rival. In the book ‘Die Biersorten der Brauwelt’ (Beer Types of the Brewing World) writer Horst Dornbusch reports that the Munich brewers did not dare to bring it to the market in Munich. Instead they sent it to Hamburg in the far north of Germany. It only made its way to the throats of the Munich beer aficionados because it was such a success in Hamburg. According to Dornbusch, it was sold in Munich on the 20th June 1895. Since then it has come a long way. Millions of litres are sold at Bavarian beer fests, first-of-all at the world famous Oktoberfest.

We brew our modern version of the artisanal ‘Munich Helles’ with barley malts from Suffolk, UK. We ferment and ‘lager’ (store) it in the traditional way. The result is a very tasty, easy drinking thirst quencher that is highly appreciated by beer drinkers here in the UK. We have called it ‘Blondie’ because of its colour. Our Helles is a crisp lager beer just as it should be: smooth in flavour and high in celebration.
